Image Cloister began in a place few would expect: a garbage dump in Riverton City, Jamaica. While serving as a missionary, the founder noticed how residents spoke of life as something that happened to them — without choice, without power. But when the community was invited to co-create a mural of peace, something shifted. People gathered. They contributed. They saw what they had made — and what might still be possible.

That moment became a question: What if visual art could be more than expressive? What if it could become a tool for rethinking, reclaiming, and responding?

That question became a method. And that method became Image Cloister.

Grounded in Freirean pedagogy, neuroaesthetics, and doctoral research on mythic thought and image perception, Image Cloister helps individuals reflect on life’s constraints — and identify meaningful ways forward. First developed in shelters, clinics, and transitional housing settings, the model has been refined through years of fieldwork and continues to grow as a space for reflective insight and grounded response.

Today, Image Cloister lives in parish racks—free at Black Catholic parishes and in communities serving low-income Black neighbors—offered as take-home reflection cards.
