Why Image Cloister
Creating Space for Black Catholics to Encounter God Through Sacred Art
Image Cloister was created to support Black Catholics seeking hope, healing, and reflection through sacred art. For many Black Catholics, the richness of Catholic faith has not always been reflected in the images, symbols, and stories most commonly encountered in religious art. We believe sacred art can help people recognize God’s presence, reflect on their own experiences, and discover new pathways toward prayer, healing, and hope.
Through sacred imagery, Scripture, and guided reflection, Image Cloister creates opportunities for contemplation that honor both the Catholic tradition and the lived experiences of Black Catholics around the world.

Why Sacred Art
“In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art. Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of God.”
— Pope St. John Paul II
Letter to Artists (1999)
Our Mission
Image Cloister exists to help reverse the historical erasure of Black representation in Roman Catholic sacred art by creating and sharing culturally meaningful Black sacred imagery for prayer, reflection, and healing.
Through Black sacred art, Scripture, and guided reflection, we seek to help Black Catholics around the world recognize their struggles, encounter God’s presence in their lives, and take meaningful steps toward hope, healing, and purpose-filled living aligned with God’s call for them.
